SUMMARY:Broad Run Trail Jingle Bell 5 Miler
DESCRIPTION:Start the season off right with this 5 mile race.  All runners will be given bells to wear on their shoes!  The race will be chip timed and the course runs over rolling terrain through wooded areas and along the Broad Run trail. \nStart/Finish Location: Victory Lakes Elementary School\, 12001 Tygart Lake Drive\, Bristow\, VA 20136 \nFlier with race details can be found here. \nRegister at www.signmeup/84438 \nIf you don’t want to run you can still help out!  We need  volunteers to mark the trail\, hand out medals to winners\, set up snacks  and water.  Contact Paula Small at 571-393-8840 to volunteer for the event. \nThe Broad Run Linear Trail is one of several trail projects being worked  on by volunteers from Prince William Trails and Streams Coalition  (PWTSC) with support from the Prince William County Park Authority.   Currently the trail runs from the vicinity of Victory Lakes Elementary  along the Broad Run up to the Kingsbrooke sub-division.  The trail will  eventually run from behind the Target on Route 28 to Glenkirk Road near  Lake Manassas which is approximately 7.5 miles. Recently\, two new bridges were installed along the trail near Victory Lakes  to create easier access to the trail for trail users.

SUMMARY:Group Paddle from Lower Lake Jackson Put-in
DESCRIPTION:Prince William Trails & Streams Coalition is planning a “Fun Paddle” on Saturday\, 15 Sep from 9 AM until 2 PM from the Lake Jackson Dam Put-in Point to Riverview Estates HOA take-out point\, about 5.5 miles. \nA check on weather and water level at put-in point will be made on 12 Sep to make sure everything is in a “Go” mode and participants notified.  Please register here to ensure you receive these communications.  \nPaddlers should plan on dropping off their equipment at the Lake Jackson  Dam Occoquan River Trailhead area and take their vehicles to the  Riverview Estates HOA take-out site which is available by special  permission of the HOA. \nDirections to Lake Jackson Dam and to the HOA site are below along with some Safety Checklist Tips.  A shuttle service to move paddlers from the Riverview Estates HOA site\, once they park their vehicles\, back to the Occoquan River Trailhead is being planned for that day to ease traffic congestion.  Carpooling is encouraged where possible. \n  \nIf you have any questions on this event our point of contact is Ed Dandar\, PWTSC project officer at 703-791-6158 or blueways@www.pwtsc.org. \nDirections to the Lake Jackson Dam Occoquan River Trailhead Site \nFrom I-95 go north on Rte. 234 and cross the Occoquan Creek Bridge.  Make a left turn at 1st red light on to Coles Drive and an immediate left on to Mercury Drive.  Make a left turn on Hinson Mill Lane and Trailhead entrance.  Paddlers drop-off equipment and proceed to Riverview Estates HOA site.  Other visitors will be helped to find parking in the general area. \nFrom Rte. 28 go south on Rte. 234 passing the Brentsville Road Exit and Traffic Light and turning right at the next Traffic Light on to Coles Drive and then left on to Mercury Drive.  If you miss the Coles Drive turn\, make next right turn before the Bridge on to Hinson Mill Lane where someone will help you find parking in the general area.  Car-pooling is encouraged because parking is limited on Mercury Drive and between the Outdoor Furniture and Backyard Shed & Deck.  Parking is available off of Coles Rd on the shoulder of Collinreid Ct.  \n  \nDirections from Lake Jackson Dam Occoquan River Trailhead to Riverview Estates HOA Site \n  \nStart from Trailhead Entrance on Hinson Mill Lane and proceed northwest on Mercury Dr. toward Coles Dr. Turn right onto Coles Dr. Turn left at traffic light onto VA-234 N/Dumfries Rd.  Turn slight right at next light onto VA-3000 E/Prince William Parkway.  Stay straight and turn right at 3d light onto Prince William Parkway/VA-3000 E.  At second light\, turn left onto Yates Ford Rd.  Turn right at next light on to Davis Ford Road.   Go over bridge and turn right onto River Forest Drive (into Riverview Estates)\, then turn right onto Greenway Court.  At the end of the cul-de-sac the gate will be open so you can go down to the river and park in designated area.  \nSafety & Equipment Checklist \n  \n\nLife Jackets To Be Worn By Everyone in Canoes and Kayaks.  Don’t forget Paddles.  Recommend a ¼” or 3/8” bow or stern rope about 8-15 ft. long for towing if needed.  Bring an extra paddle if you have one.\nMedical Emergency\, Call 911– Lake Jackson VFD.  Bring your Cell Phone.\nIn the event of an unexpected Thunderstorm while on the water\, go to shore immediately and take cover\, but stay away from tall trees.\nWear hat for head & face protection.  Bring Sun Glasses and string for glasses.\nBring pocket knife\, if you have one\, for cutting fishing line or other items.  Bring personal first aid kit if you have one.\nRecommend back-up change of clothes in water proof bag in event it is needed.\nApply sun screen and bug spray before departing.

DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, August 4th from 9-1 come out to pick up trash and help improve the trail connection at one of the new bridges at Andrew Leitch Park on the Neabsco Greenway. \nUpdate: we will meet on the edge of the park\, at the end of Ruler Court in Dale City at 9am on August 4.  Wear long pants and proper footwear. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, July 14th from 9-1 come out and help improve the trail around the Lake at Locust Shade park. \nWe’ll meet inside the park here at 9am on July 14.  Wear long pants and proper footwear – there are  sections of this trail that are muddy. Bring work gloves and tools if  you have them\, but don’t worry if you don’t because we will have extras  on hand.  We’ll have snacks and extra water for  participants. \nPlease register for this workday here – registration isn’t required\, but it really helps us best plan for the   day.  In case of inclement weather\, check our website the morning of   the event for cancellation/ postponement information.  For more   information\, contact Zoe at president@www.pwtsc.org

DESCRIPTION:This event is the kick-off of the Health Paddles program\, a program designed for families to get outside and exercise by hiking and paddling. \nCome out on Saturday\, May 19th\, 2012 at Occoquan Regional Park in Lorton\, VA from 10 am – 3 pm. Recreation and health professionals will be on hand to help you build your personal health itinerary.  The healthy paddles website will list dozens of hiking and paddling opportunities throughout the year for families to get out and meet their goals. \nThe National Park Trust has selected this event to celebrate National Kids To Parks Day.

SUMMARY:Metro DC Bike to Work Day 2012
DESCRIPTION:Metro Washington Bike to Work Day is part of the national focus promoting Biking to Work as a commuting option.  May is National Bike Month\, May 14-18 is National Bike to Work Week and Friday\, May 18\, is the Metro Bike to Work Day event.\nBike to Work Day has been held annually in the Washington metropolitan region with a main rallying point or Pit Stop in downtown DC. This event has been coordinated by the Washington Area Bicyclists Association (WABA) for over a decade. In September 2000\, the Commuter Connections program as a part of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments partnered with WABA to form a regional Bike To Work Day 2001 Steering Committee to examine the feasibility of adding additional Bike To Work Day Pit Stops or rallying points throughout the region\, thus creating a larger awareness of using cycling to work as a viable commuting alternative.  Over 10\,000 bicyclists registered to participate in the 2011 event\, visiting one of the forty-nine regional pit stops.\nBike to Work Day Pit Stops Located in Prince William County\nPrince William County hosted Bike to Work Day pit stops for the second time in May 2011 at six different locations across the county\, in the Town of Haymarket and the City of Manassas.  We are adding a new pit stop this year at the Woodbridge VRE station.  Please contact Rick Holt\, rholt.bikedude@gmail.com\, to find out how to get involved.\nEach pit stop will offer a local mix of food\, drinks\, entertainment\, dynamic speakers and chances to win bicycles and other sweet prizes.
