SUMMARY:Bike to Work Day 2014
DESCRIPTION:Looking for an alternative to driving to work? Are you tired of paying high gas prices and traffic congestion? Want to help the environment and get fit at the same time? Do you want to bike with your child to school? Retired and just want to get out for a bike ride and a cup of coffee? Try bicycling on Bike to Work Day in Prince William County\, Friday\, May 16\, 2014.\nWe will have eight pit stops this year located in Prince William County\, the City of Manassas\, Town of Dumfries and Town of Haymarket. Check out http://www.biketoworkmetrodc.org/ to register to bicycle to work\, to school\, for shopping\, to have fun and visit a pit stop\, or wherever you will want to travel to on Bike to Work Day.\nDid you know that 50% of VRE riders live within five miles of the VRE station that they use to get to work? Did you know that almost all of the PRTC buses in Prince William County have bicycle racks on the front so you can take your bike with you? Bike to mass transit locations and then ride on VRE\, or PRTC buses\, to your final destination.\nThe pit stops will have happy smiling volunteers to greet you early in the morning. They will hand out Bike to Work Day t-shirts for bicyclists who registered for the pit stop and offer food and refreshments. Several of the pit stops will have bicycle mechanics on hand from local bicycle shops to conduct safety tune-ups. All bicyclists registering for the pit stops will be entered in a random drawing for assorted bicycle related accessories. Bicyclists registering for the pit stops located at the Manassas VRE\, Woodbridge VRE and the Rippon Landing VRE are eligible to receive free VRE trip passes (limited number so show up early).\nSo you are saying to yourself that you have not been on a bicycle for a while\, or you are concerned about safety while riding a bicycle\, well we have a great deal for you. We will be holding several classes on Safe Bicycle Commuting in April and May. Please check out the Prince William Trails and Streams website\, www.pwtsc.org\, for more information on upcoming classes.\nBike to Work Day 2014 poster

SUMMARY:Doves Landing exploratory walk
DESCRIPTION:PWTSC will conduct a walk through Doves Landing to explore existing trails in the interior of the property\, and walk to the old farm site – a point of historic interest.  Doves Landing has well-established trails along the waterways that bound the property\, but additional trails or trail segments are present in the interior as well.  Some may be useful in completing a trail network in the future.  Prince William County officials held a series of public hearings and community meetings on Doves Landing in 2013\, culminating in approval of a Master Plan for the site.  The plan calls for establishing a public park for passive recreational uses\, and preservation of cultural and natural resources (consistent with Alternative C of the Master Plan). \nPlease click here to register for this event (registration will help us plan for parking\, which is limited at the site).  Contact Zoe for more information about this event:  zoe@vitter.com

SUMMARY:Trail Maintenance Workday at James S. Long Regional Park
DESCRIPTION:Join us on September 28 at 9am for a trail maintenance workday at the wooded James S. Long Regional Park.  The Trails consist of about 4 miles of scenic trail along Catharpin Creek and another estuary that feeds into it\, separated from the soccer and baseball fields by old growth hardwood forest.  We will be heavy trimming two sections of trail near the ball fields\, as well as mainly hiking with infrequent trimming along the trails toward the back of the park.  See a map of the park and workday here. \nAdditional opportunities during the workday: \n– observe the progress of the Stream Bank Mitigation effort.  James S. Long Park is the second park in Prince William County that is being worked by Angler Construction. \n– walk the Dominion Valley Trail being constructed for a public easement trail connecting James S. Long park to Silver Lake Regional Park.  The trail is approximately 2.5 miles long between the parks. \nBring loppers and pruning saws if you have them – don’t worry if you don’t\, we have tools to share. Long pants\, sturdy shoes and bug spray are recommended. \nMeet at the parking lot at the back of the park\, by the baseball fields.  Pre-register for the workday here – it will help us plan for the event\, and we’ll be able to notify you if there are any changes.  Contact Scott Helberg for more information. \nIf you would like to participate with us for future events\, please check the calendar on the website www.pwtsc.org\, or sign up to receive the monthly newsletter announcing our upcoming activities.
