A group of volunteers gathered at Doves Landing Park on the occasion of National Public Lands Day (September 24, 2016) to work on improving the trail network in the Park. The PWC Parks Department had materials on hand, ready for volunteers to install a stone base wrapped in fabric on one wet and muddy section (the Parks Department staff will cover it over with soil and compact it). Other volunteers re-worked the trail surface on another wet section where water seeped from the hillside, improving the drainage and making the trail more durable. Another group concentrated on the task of grubbing stumps out of the trail, which had been left in place during the initial trail construction effort.
Members of several groups participated, including:
- Prince William Trails & Streams Coalition (PWTSC)
- Mid Atlantic Off Road Enthusiasts (MORE)
- Northern Virginia Conservation Trust
- Quantico Mountain Bike Club
- Active Prince William
MORE provided coffee & donuts to kick-off the workday, and REI provided lunch for the group.
Thanks to all those who participated and demonstrated their interest in caring for our public lands.
